An early innovation at WCJD was the establishment of The Stonewood Gallery. As a subsidiary of WCJD, The Stonewood Gallery has been dedicated to bringing our customers fine crafted art, custom furnishings, and gift items.

We are proud to announce another innovative company to the West Coast Juniper Distributing family – Juniper Works! L.L.C. and the Juniper Works! TM brand.

Juniper Works! TM mission is the development of a complete line of “juniper-based” self care and household care products with a focus on key items that best exemplify the many recognized benefits of juniper.

Historically, juniper oils and berries were among the most important herbal remedies used in India, Europe, China, and Native American cultures. Juniper’s therapeutic and healing properties attribute to its traditional use in teas, tinctures, and salves. The current modes of use include tablets, capsules and more diverse topical products. The list of topical uses includes skin ailments such as minor wounds and insect bites, joint and muscle soreness, inflammation, and tissue fluid retention.

Juniper Works! TM is pleased to introduce the first in a line of self care products…

Why are Western Juniper Products Eco-friendly?

The rapid expansion of western juniper into neighboring plant communities during the past 130 years has caused considerable concern because of; increased soil erosion, reduced stream flows, reduced forage production, altered wildlife habitat, changes in plant community composition, structure and biodiversity and the replacement of plant communities with woodlands. During pre-settlement times the western juniper forests were estimated to be approximately 2 million acres. Today the juniper forests are up to 10 million acres. A mature juniper tree can consume up to 75 gallons of water per day. Where farmers, enviromentalists and tribes are scraping for every last drop of water, the exploding growth of western juniper is creating an even greater demand on the already stressed water supply. Agencies, nonprofits and watershed councils have spent years and a lot of taxpayers dollars developing strategies to reduce juniper populations, with limited success. Today many public and private land owners are cutting juniper and burning the piles (not good for air quality or the carbon imprint). By utilizing juniper we are helping the enviroment by slowing the expansion of the juniper overgrowth and helping the carbon imprint by reducing burning.

Eco-Friendly Western Juniper Posts

LONG LASTING!
Western Juniper is the most rot resistant species of wood in the Pacific Northwest! According to a long term post life study done by Oregon State University Western Juniper has a 30 to 60 year life span, in ground, without chemical treatment! We have spoken to ranchers that claim to have field posts in the ground for over 75 years!!!

When you are thinking sustainability, here is something to consider........Given that a Juniper post lasts at least 30 years in the ground, the user has two fixed costs over that 30 year period- the cost of the posts and the cost of labor to install the posts. The fixed costs of the Juniper may extend well into 50 years or more! With other species there is a much shorter "in ground" life span. So, although a treated fir or pine post may cost less, a user will have to not only purchase posts 2-3 times during a comparible Juniper post life; but they also must pay for the labor to remove and install the posts 2-3 additional times! A small ranch operation that has 1,000 posts in the ground could save up to $20,000.00 over a 30 year time span by using Juniper over other species'.

No other untreated wood post can compare!

Organic! - When used in ground it requires no preservatives. Perfect for vineyards, gardens, plantations and other organic applications where chemical treatment is not an option.

Did you know....

Eastern Red Cedar, which is most commonly known for cedar chest liners, is actually a juniper that grows in the eastern portion of the U.S.? It's called Juniperus virginiana by its botanical name. Western Juniper is Juniperus occidentalis. Western Juniper has many of the same characteristics as its eastern cousin, such as the insect and rot resistance and the aromatic smell. Although they are very similar , Western Juniper has a lighter color wood and grows much larger than Eastern Red Cedar.
